Dengue outbreak prompts urgent response in Bhatkal: 17 confirmed cases and preventative measures underway

Bhatkal: 17 cases of dengue have been confirmed in Bhatkal, in view of which necessary measures are being taken to prevent further spread of dengue in Bhatkal. This was told by Dr. Ramesh Rao, ٗUttara Kannada Disease Control Officer.

After the death of two people due to suspected dengue fever in Bhatkal and the report of the rapid spread of dengue in Bhatkal, Dr. Rao visited Bhatkal from Karwar. He along with Bhatkal Assistant  commissioner Dr. Naina and Taluka Health officer Dr. Savita Kamath visited Mavin Kurwe Panchayat area and inspected the area. Later he visited the office of Bhatkal's oldest social organisation Majlise Islah wo Tanzeem and conducted meeting with Tanzeem officials along with local Muncipal councillors. Bhatkal TMC chief officer Neelkanth Mesta, Taluka Health officer Dr. Savita Kamath and Muncipal health inspector Sujiya Suman amongst others were present.

Dr. Ramesh Rao said that 116 dengue cases were detected in Bhatkal through rapid test. But we cannot rely on the rapid test. He said after dengue positive in the rapid case, we send the sample of those patients for "ELISA" test, and only if the ELISA test is positive, we can diagnose dengue fever. He said that out of 116 cases of dengue in Bhatkal, we had sent the samples of 41 patients for ELISA test, out of which the report of 17 people has come positive for dengue, we have not sent the samples of the rest, he added.

He said that the 17 dengue positive cases that have been confirmed are mostly from the ancient streets of Bhatkal. He said that there are about five thousand houses in Bhatkal town, we will now conduct a fever survey and nerve survey and try to create awareness among the people. He urged the municipal as well as panchayat authorities to ensure to Dispose of waste within next 2 days. If water accumulates in any area then drain it and empty it soon.

He directed officials to carry out fogging in dengue affected areas once a week, fogging indoors as well as outside the houses should do without further delay. He instruct Muncipal officials to arrange atleast four machines and complete the fogging work in all the affected areas within three to four days. He said that atleast three round of fogging should complete on weekly basis.

Addressing to Bhatkal people Dr. Ramesh Rao said that in case of fever, do not take fever medicine from any pharmacy shop, but consult a doctor and take the medicine under doctor's prescription. In this regard, Taluk Health Officer Dr. Savita Kamath said that she will issue instructions to all the pharmacies in Bhatkal that no fever medicine should be given to anyone without a doctor's prescription.

It may be recalled that two days ago, a 24-year-old youth died of suspected dengue fever in Bundar under Mavin Korve Panchayat limit of Bhatkal, similarly, a 77-year-old man also died of suspected dengue in Qazia Street of town municipal limits.
